The Magic of Art and Design in Italy
Advent Design International
4/26/2007

We at Advent Design care deeply about Italy and all that it means to the world at large.

Advent Design has relied heavily upon the good and great visions of the Italians for its magnificent Advent Stone custom stone bath creations.  For more than thirty years Advent Design's founder has been traveling to Italy to gain inspiration and knowledge of this great culture.  In fact, he lived in Italy for more than ten years.

Luciam the second century Greek rhetorician described Italy as paradise.  The buildings of Italy span almost 3,000 years drawing influences from a wide variety of sources.  Etruscan and Roman buildings borrowed heavily from ancient Greece and in later centuries, Norman, Arabic and Byzantine styles colored Italy's Romanesque and gothic architecture.  Anywhere you turn while in Italy your eye will discover the art and science of magnificent design.

If you give the Italians a problem to solve they are proficient to resolve it.  As part of their unique character as a culture the Italians have the inherent carefree and free thinking characteristic in their personality to freely dream of new ways to interpret ideas.  A fundamental outcome of this inherent characteristic can be easily recognized in their art, architecture and creative design workmanship as a culture.

Would you like to bejewel your bathroom with a masterwork of art and design?  At Advent Design we create exclusive baths carved from solid blocks of stone including, travertine, marble, basalt and limestone for private residencies all over the world.  Advent Design has assembled a team of experts to create true and actual works of art which will transform a relaxing bath into an experience of holistic vanity.  But behind so much of what we do are the great minds of the Italians and their culture.

Internationally renowned for its' marble quarries we often go to Carrara in search of blocks of stone to create Advent hand carved solid stone baths.  Carrara's almost flawless white stone has been prized for centuries by famous sculptors for Michelangelo to Henry Moore (the stone from Michelangelo's David came from Carrara.  This regions' three hundred or more quarries date back to Roman times making this one of the oldest industrial sites in continuous use in the world.

Advent Design goes to many of the cities marble-sawing mills and stone carvers workshops in search of second and third generation stone masters whom understand how to work the marble in quartz in ways that most of the world's cultures could never understand.  For example, if you look at Advent Design's model Siena round stone bath it is an object of great beauty and exemplifies an Italian stone master's eye to create detail and near perfection in the art of creating a truly magnificent Advent Design stone bath.

Sourcing the Right Stone From All Over the World

At Advent Design a large percentage of our time is dedicated to international travel in pursuit of great blocks of stone.  We must constantly be traveling the world to ensure that every quarry is up to our standards.

Creating a solid stone soaking custom bath masterpiece requires the knowledge and wisdom from many years experience, especially for making custom stone baths.  Some stone used for Advent custom stone baths, stone tubs and stone basins comes from Tuscany, Italy.  Some Advent custom stone baths are made from stone which is excavated from the mountains of Carrara, Italy.  Sometimes we must go where the desert meets the mountains in Turkey to select the right kind of stone.  The stone must have natural characteristics suitable for carving.  These characteristics must include natural crystallization; a particular degree of mohs hardness; a relatively low porosity and a mineral content that when analyzed reveals that the 7 or 8 ton block which we excavate will withstand the 300 to 400 hundred hours needed to chisel and refine into a truly magnificent and aesthetically beautiful custom stone bath by Advent Design.

Qualifying a Stone Artisan as a Stone Master

A stone artisan by definition may be described as an individual who specializes in the art of working with stone.  However, a stone artisan is not necessarily a stone master.  By our definition at Advent Design a stone master is one who has mastered the art of working with the stone.  The essential difference lies in his long experience.  A stone master is often one who has given his life's work to understanding the nuisances and unique characteristics inherent in chiseling in sanding and shaping a piece of stone into a beautiful finished piece.

When Advent Design commissions a stone master to create custom baths, the stone master needs to have a high degree of understanding to interpret the design drawing on a piece of paper in order to create a truly magnificent Advent Design custom stone bath, stone tub and stone basin.  Stone masters are often second generation family individuals.  For example, we work closely with a family outside of Siena in the hill country of Tuscany where like the father the son has been working his entire life with stone.  The father has recently retired but the son gains all of his father's wisdom because the father and mother are living together with the son and the family continues to carve and shape beautiful stone objects including balustrades and magnificent solid stone columns and the most beautiful Advent Stone luxury baths you could imagine.

We commission our stone masters to carve shape and form nature's greatness into magnificent works of art.  As always, we select our sources and carefully design these luxury baths with a single focus; to provide our clients the opportunity to enjoy a lifetime of luxury bathing pleasure and artistic beauty.  Our stone masters carve each piece with meticulous care and patience so that each Advent Design custom bath turns the ordinary bathing experience into the ultimate spa bathing experience.
